EndNote Online plug-ins

The Downloads tab in EndNote Online provides you with two plug-ins:

Cite While You Write (CWYW) allows you to insert references, and automatically format citations and bibliographies in Microsoft Word. Web of Science and Basic users need to install the CWYW tools.

  • For those using Windows, an additional Internet Explorer plug-in is included which allows direct export from many databases in Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. Note that this will not work with Firefox and is not available for Macs.‚Äč

Capture Reference allows you to import data from the Web that is not within bibliographic databases.

CWYW / Internet Explorer plug-in for Windows

Only Web of Science and Basic users need to install the CWYW tools. If you are using EndNote Desktop, EndNote already includes the plug-in for both Desktop and Online.

If you prefer to use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge or if you need to install the plug-in on several computers, use the .msi installer.

To install the Internet Explorer plug-in but not the CWYW tools:

  1. Select Download Windows with Internet Explorer or Download Windows MSI
  2. Run the installer, clicking continue as needed
  3. When you reach the option to install both the Internet Explorer and CWYW options, deselect the CWYW option

CWYW plug-in for MACs

Only Web of Science and Basic users need to install the CWYW tools. If you are using EndNote Desktop, EndNote already includes the plug-in for both Desktop and Online.

Capture Reference bookmarklet

In Internet Explorer the Capture button is automatically displayed in your browser toolbar when you download the Internet Explorer plug-in.

To install the Capture bookmarklet for Chrome, Firefox or Safari

  1. On the Downloads page in Endnote Online, locate the Capture Reference bookmarklet on the screen and drag it to the bookmarks bar (Chrome or Firefox) or favorites bar (Safari).
  2. A Capture Reference button will now appear on the Bookmarks bar (Chrome or Firefox) or Favorites bar (Safari).
