2. Tabs panel includes three tabs:

  • Reference tab - allows you to edit the contents of the highlighted reference
  • Preview tab - this allows you to view the reference in the style selected
  • PDF Viewer tab - allows you to attach plus view and annotate attached PDF files

The library window column headings e.g  Author, Year, Title etc. can now be dragged to reposition as desired.

Mark references and apply ratings

In your EndNote library you can mark your references as read or unread by simply clicking on the grey dot.  The read reference will no longer appear in bold. If you have the reference open use this icon

If you do not want your unread references to appear in bold in your library window you can adjust this option in your preferences. Go to Edit>Preferences...>Read/Unread and uncheck the box Show unread references in bold text.

You can also rate your references.  Highlight your reference then click on the dots in the Rating column to create your own star rating.

In the reference window the Rating field can be set to show or not to show as required - use this drop down menu   to check or uncheck the box Show Rating Field.

Creating, opening and closing your library

EndNote allows you to create multiple libraries however it is strongly recommended that you work with one library only.

  • From the Start menu, choose All Programs, select EndNote and then click on EndNote Program to open it
  • Select the Do not integrate with EndNote Web at this time and click on Finish
  • Next, click on the Create a New Library image. Save this in: C: My Documents
  • At  File name, type in a name for your EndNote library. Click Save
  • If the screen appears blank, go to File, Open and then Open library (or Control + O)
  • To exit, click on the X at the top right hand corner or use Control + Q

Save and Backup
It is important to keep a back-up copy of your library. Save your library or part of it to a compressed file as a back-up. See
Saving and restoring a compressed copy of a library from the Saving your library tab under Windows.
