OUA students' guide: Before you enrol

This guide has been developed for Open Universities Australia students studying at Curtin University. Some sections of the guide will be relevant for any Curtin University, UniReady or Open Universities Australia student.

Developing study skills

Here are some websites you can use in developing your study skills

What can you do to prepare?

Now that you have decided to enrol in a Curtin course, you may want to start preparing for study before your enrolment is processed. There are free pages on both the Curtin and Library websites that you can access. This page tells you what is available to you on the Library website before you enrol.

Remember to set up your OASIS account when your enrolment has been processed. OASIS is the student portal for the University. You need your OASIS password to use computing services (including access to e-books and e-journals) at Curtin.

If you have not activated your OASIS account, you can do it here.

After you enrol, your student number and OASIS password will give you access to e-books, e-journals and databases in the Library.

Set up your study area

When you start university, you need to take responsibility for your own study.  Being able to study effectively and efficiently will make your time at university more fruitful and enjoyable.  Here are some hints on effective studying:

  1. Your study area should be comfortable, with sufficient light and air-flow to study for long periods.
  2. Plan your study timetable carefully, and stick to your plan.
  3. Be strict with the management of your time, so that you don't fall behind in your work.
  4. Look after your physical well-being - get lots of sleep, eat well, exercise moderately at least.

Curtin's Learning Centre offers online programs to improve your writing and study skills.
